Thorn, the white town

The capital of a small principality for over 800 years, and now a protected townscape dotted with monuments, Thorn has a lot to offer anyone wanting to explore! A historic centre with picturesque white houses and numerous authentic buildings from the 15th to 18 century, as well as winding streets paved with original Meuse cobble stones, floor mosaics and medieval features.

In order to really get to know Thorn, you can arrange a tour from a professional guide from Toertje Thorn For more information, visit the website: www.toertjethorn.nl

Did you know that Thorn also boasts a vineyard, and that splendid wines are made from these grapes? The vineyard itself lies around 1 kilometre away from the centre of Thorn. The tasting room where the grapes are pressed and the wine bottled is a mere 50 metres behind Hotel Crasborn. For more information, visit the website of "Wijngoed Thorn": www.wijngoed-thorn.nl

Stay in "The White Town" and explore by bike or on foot the idyllic villages along the Meuse, using the unique bicycle point-by-point signposting system with which you can choose your own route every day.

Be sure also to visit the "Land of Thorn" museum, located on the "De Wijngaard" square only 150 meters from Hotel Crasborn.  www.museumhetlandvanthorn.nl

The Abbey

The Gothic Abbey still dominates this small town. This cross-shaped basilica with its Romanesque westwork dates back to the 10th century, and boasts a Baroque interior with an imposing main altar. This wonderful Abbey, which was run by an abbess and ladies of noble birth, is an 800-year old legacy of female reign. Until the invasion of the French in 1794, Thorn had been a source of prosperity for the whole region.

Kapel onder de Linden, the 'chapel under the limewood', also has a beautiful Baroque interior. Luckily enough, these beautiful pieces of history are still intact for us to admire today.
